Learn to paint watercolours in the beautiful city of Buenos Aires
Love watercolours and would love to be able to paint? Already paint but want to improve? Or just want to spend an enjoyable and creative time in some of the best spots in Buenos Aires?
Juan Ian is now offering 1 to 1 or very small group watercolour painting courses in English or Spanish. Each course is tailored to your needs, covering everything from the basics to improving your technique.
What we offer
Tuition is offered as a minimum of 2 hrs and can be held at any of the following locations
- At any of the beautiful parks and corners around the city*, or
- at Juan’s studio in Colegiales, a peaceful and accesible neighbourhood.
The hourly rate is US$40 for one person, with reductions for the 3rd and 4th person. *Please note that there is an additional 1 hour surcharge to cover travel time for en plein air urban trips.
All materials are included in the price (watercolour paper blocs, watercolor brushes, study quality paint tubes and painting boards). Unless of course you wish to bring your own.
I took a private lesson with Juan. He speaks English fluently, so language was not a problem. I’ll say upfront that it was incredible. I learned more in a 2.5 hr session with Juan than I have in 20 years of painting on my own.
The one thing that set this lesson apart for me is that I sent Juan a sample of my work beforehand. He used that information to address what he saw as areas I could work on and change my approach to watercolor. It was incredibly powerful.
He still went through an entire painting with me but emphasizing techniques he knew would challenge me. Then, he presented how to think about what I was doing, watch him demonstrate, and allow me to practice. The most useful lesson I’ve ever had. If you are taking a private lesson I encourage anyone to allow Juan the opportunity to understand your work before you arrive.
By the way, what challenged me is my ability to work with the water to pigment ratio properly which usually led to may blooms in my paintings. That wonderful transition from a loaded brush to dry brush is so exciting in a painting and one I have yet to master, but I believe I have the knowledge now to continue that learning journey.
Juan was wonderful, not just as an instructor but simply as a person. He always made me feel comfortable despite my nervousness of “getting it right” (it is watercolor after all) and his patience with me was endless. I could see dramatic improvement in myself just after one lesson. Time with Juan is well spent. My painting is attached.
